One of the top questions that I am asked is “do you have any suggestions on what to wear for family pictures?” Trying to coordinate outfits can seem like a huge task when thinking of 2 adults and a few kids. Whether you are a fashionista with an excellent color pallet or a jeans and t-shirt type of family, you won't regret putting in a little more effort into what you wear. The mission is to create an appealing visual interest in your photos. Here are a few things you can do to look great for your family pictures:
Colors
- Pick two main colors that you like the best. Work out a color scheme from there but use the brightest color as an accent. If you can buy your clothes all from one store for the family this will be easier to coordinate.
- Layer, Layer, Layer. This may not be realistic during the summer months, but spring and fall are excellent times to schedule family portrait sessions. Layering not only creates the visual interest mentioned above but it keeps you warm during your session. Cardigans, tights, scarves and blazers work very well.
- Accessories! I am a big fan of a flower or headband in the hair for girls and suspenders and bow-tie for the boys. These small details can make a huge difference in your photos.
Things to Stay Away From
- Hawaiian shirts, crazy busy prints, polka dots, etc.
- Tennis shoes
- Sleeveless or low-cut tops
- White socks
Preparation goes a long way here. If you think ahead and get your outfits together a week or two making sure everything fits properly you will save yourself a lot of trouble. Ever had that shirt that was slightly short, and you must keep pulling it down? What about that pair of pants that just won't stay up? It becomes very uncomfortable and takes away from the moment when there is a constant need to adjust your clothing.
When you dress nice, you feel nice. When you feel nice, I get awesome pictures of you! I do my best to get great pictures of all the families I photograph and will adjust clothing and accessories when needed. If you need some guidance, I am happy to help!
